"Bitter is the New Black" by Jen Lancaster

Ooo, yay, my first recommendation! I'm so excited that I'll just pretend people care about what I have to say.

Title and Author:
"Bitter is the New Black: Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass, Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office" by Jen Lancaster. Published in 2006.

Summary (from Amazon.com):

Jen Lancaster was living the sweet life-until real life kicked her to the curb.

She had the perfect man, the perfect job-hell, she had the perfect life-and there was no reason to think it wouldn't last. Or maybe there was, but Jen Lancaster was too busy being manicured, pedicured, highlighted, and generally adored to notice.

This is the smart-mouthed, soul-searching story of a woman trying to figure out what happens next when she's gone from six figures to unemployment checks and she stops to reconsider some of the less-than-rosy attitudes and values she thought she'd never have to answer for when times were good.

My thoughts:

I thought that I'd like the book right away. After all, right on the back cover it says she was a former "Sorority girl." As a current one, I was all set to love Jen Lancaster and everything about her. Pan love, right?

Within the first chapter, I couldn't stand the woman. She was a total bitch! But at the same time, there was something wonderful about that. Some of the things that she said out loud were things I've said in my own head, but never said aloud. She was a ballsy ballbuster who grew easier to sympathize with in her softer moments and especially when her economical situation took a turn for the worst. The author is ultimately easy to sympathize with in the end, she maintains her wit, and her story is entertaining.

It was also interesting to note that her interest in writing as a career began through her blog. Hmmm... you never know! You can check it out at www.jennsylvania.com.

I do recommend the book, especially if you've felt the need to unleash your inner bitch lately. Jen Lancaster never holds back!
